about
Here's a song I wrote at the end of college, but I never got around to recording it until now. People, Christians and non-Christians alike, are imperfect, and there is usually an undercurrent of selfish gain woven into our outwardly pure motives. This is the case for me. It is only by the grace of God through Jesus Christ that we can have a new heart.
lyrics
Arm's-length society's good to us all
It fills in the gap from our house to the mall
All that I want is all that I need
But all that you need does not concern me
Deep inside our hearts
Are chambers where we keep our sordid parts
We cast a shadow of care
Can they see through it into our chests
There's nothing there
Chorus:
Have we lost our hearts again
Are we healing the wounds or are we shooting to kill
Have we lost our hearts again
Just to take what we see, just to get what we can
Hey, let's go out and we'll have a good time
Forget about work and relax with some wine
Ignoring the other's show of conceit
Yet their own display is a rush of nicotine
Painted on our hearts
Are murals of our kingdom, our work of art
We know the picture's not right
And we've known of this almost all our lives
Bridge:
Empty glasses come in pairs
Full pockets but vacant stares
Sugary smiles with veiled despair
Never content, we just stand and stare
At the crowds of people who can't get there
And we don't recall all the lives we've impaired
Pry open our chests, nothing beating there
Our hearts are beyond repair
But Jesus can give you a heart that truly cares
